Visualize
what you want without considering the budget – adjustments for the budget can
be made later. It is important for our designer to know your likes and dislikes
when the design process begins.
Draw an outline of the work area, and then draw in where you would like each
cabinet or fixture to be placed.
Take notes and cut out pictures from magazines of items you like. Make sure
the manufacture's name and model number is included in the clipping if you want
those exact pieces.
Start a folder to hold your clippings and drawings and put the folder in an
area where it won't be lost. Take the folder with you when you are shopping.
If you are shopping for ideas and you find small items you wish to use in
your remodeling project, such as drawer pulls or tile, buy one -- but only one
-- then if you change your mind you only have one item to return.

Jay reviewing design in print and on-screen
At Westchester Kitchen & Bath we understand the difficulty some customers have in being able to visualize their kitchen from floor plans alone. That's why we have employed expert designer Jay Byrne who is certified and trained by NKBA as Kitchen & Bath Designer and who has earned an Associate Degree in Design from Elizabeth Seton College and a Bachelors Degree in Fine Arts & Design from Purchase College, SUNY. With full knowledge of kitchens from design to practical aspects, he will blend the aesthetic with the practical making your kitchen not only beautiful but highly functional. Jay can custom design and present your kitchen while you comfortably sit back and view it on our wide screen display, relaxing with some hot tea or coffee. You will feel as though you are actually in your home. He can even colorize the walls, cabinets, countertops and more, adjusting to your specifications. Over just a few visits, the two of you will develop your dream kitchen. The final picture will be close to what your actual finished kitchen will look like after the renovation is complete. We also have the ability to make most changes during your visit, which will streamline the process.

Planning Isn’t One Thing... It’s Everything!
A remodeled kitchen might feel like a new kitchen, but technically speaking,
new kitchens are built when new homes are built, and kitchen remodels take place
in existing kitchens. There are several different types of remodels and various
factors that go into how a new kitchen will look. Some things to consider with
remodels and new kitchens include...
- If you’re buying a new home, the flexibility you have in designing your
kitchen will depend on whether you are buying a custom home, a developer-built
home, or a spec home.
- A kitchen remodel has to take into account many facets of your existing
home. If you work within the constraints of your home, you can simply redecorate
your kitchen by painting or replacing some of your old appliances.
- For homes with outdated appliances, materials, and even plumbing, a gut
remodel might be your best option. In addition, if space is an issue, then you
might have to consider adding additional square footage.
Know What to Expect When Remodeling
The big and obvious difference between building a new home and remodeling
an existing one is that you cannot start from scratch. Here are some examples...
- You have to demolish before you construct.
- The floor plan and style of your new kitchen must take into account the
surrounding rooms and the architecture of the home itself.
- Electrical, mechanical, and plumbing components may need updating to be
brought into compliance with current building codes.
- Structural elements such as joists and load-bearing beams may need shoring
up.
- Slanting walls and floors require installers to adjust the height of appliances
and cabinets accordingly.
With the multitude of questions that come up during a remodel, costs can
mount more quickly than most homeowners expect, and labor may take longer. You
and your designer or contractor will need to think on their feet and be creative
problem-solvers.
