How to Find the Right Sink for Your Kitchen

A sink is a sink is a sink, right? Wrong. If you’re in the midst of planning a kitchen remodel, you know this all too well. There are dozens of kitchen sink options available for you to choose from, providing you with yet another overwhelming choice to make. Which do you choose, and how do you know that it’s right for you? This post outlines some of the more popular sink options in the hopes of helping you make a more informed (and swifter) decision.

Farmhouse Sink

The farmhouse sink is a popular option because it is convenient and stylish. This type of sink has a deep basin that is large enough for pots, pans and casserole dishes to soak thoroughly. Moreover, because it sticks out slightly from the rest of the cabinetry, it prevents the need to bend over while doing dishes. Score! However, farmhouse sinks tend to cost more because they require custom cabinetry around them. Additionally, water drips more easily down the front of a farmhouse sink than any other sink type.

Drop-In Sink

A drop-in kitchen sink is one that is placed nicely inside of a hole cut into the kitchen countertop. This is the most common type of sink as it is inexpensive and easy to install. Moreover, it can be easily replaced with another sink of its kind. The only drawback is that dirt and grime can get caught under the rim of the sink where it rests on the countertop.

Under-mount Sink

Unlike a drop-in sink, an under-mount sink attaches below the countertop, providing for a seamless and uninterrupted look as you cannot see the rim of the sink. Under-mount sinks make it easier for you to clean your kitchen counters (simply wipe crumbs and other debris straight from the counter into sink) and they provide more counter space. However, they are fairly expensive to buy and install, are not easily replaced and tend to trap gunk on the underside where the sink attaches to the countertop.

Each kitchen sink type has its merits; however, your style, budget and maintenance needs will ultimately determine which is best for you.
